Fausto Sevila
I was born in Santiago, Cuba in 1960, but lived in central Oriente at the foot hills of the Sierra Cristal, the birth place of two revolutions. I lived with my grandparents, parents and sister.
My formal schooling started in 1970 when we arrived to Elizabeth, NJ and where I still reside. I took my first Art Class at Douglass College and finished at Mason Gross with an MFA.
I’ve had the privilege of working in the Newark Public Schools for 34 years. I was also an adjunct professor at Rutgers and Essex County College.
I have always made art, even when I didn’t know that what I was making was Art in my early years. In my first 10 years, the dry jump piles in the back of the house were my material and teachers. In high school the library and art materials that my father and mother brought home was the source of my art training. Making things has always been a way of me learning and valuing the world.
Art for me has always been a healing force. It helped me to heal the rift between living in a more natural environment (Cuba) and a more manufactured environment like in the US. The work I am presently showing is an attempt at using old stories from my past to connect to something greater than the recent effects of GBS.
